What I Want
What I Want

Today while putting some clothes away I came to a realization... I spend A LOT of money on things that I end up not liking after only a few months. It seems like I can never dress myself in something that I totally 100% love and I end up giving most of my clothes away. It really disgusts me how much money I have wasted since I graduated college almost 7 (!) years ago. I did some quick math and estimated I have probably wasted over $10,000 on crap I didn't really love or even need. I wish I had saved that money!!!!

I am turning over a new leaf. First of all, I am giving up shopping for Lent. If you are a regular reader of my blog you know that I "give up" shopping a lot. This time I am sticking to it, though. Easter is April 4 this year so I have about 5 weeks to go. Also, when I am allowed to shop again, I am only going to buy classic items that I truly love. On my wish list are a trench, simple gold hoop earrings and a gold watch, a navy blue one piece suit for the summer, and a beautiful bottle of perfume.

Do any of you have the same views about your closet? Are there any classic pieces that you cannot live without?

I would like to commit to this like you. 4o days of Lent, 40 days with no shopping. But I should have read this before.;) Because I shop on Saturday. ;)

I totally agree! I have such a shopping problem! I think Ii try to justify it with the fact that most of the things I buy come from thrift stores and are really cheap, but I still waste so much money! I really need to save too!

I can't imagine my closet without my black pumps and a perfect LBD.

I hear ya, I've wasted soooo much money on useless clothes! I love the idea of buying classics and stuff you're 100% in to... good luck building an awesome closet! :)

Um, I only think about this topic like all the time!! Over the weekend I started pulling out clothes that I hadn't shown much love to, and realized that I only wore them a couple of times, and thought about the money I could have saved just not buying them at all! I wish you all the best for keeping up with Lent, and shopping in your closet. Maybe you can share tips on how to hold back when having a weak moment and feel like shopping!!

Haha... I'm trying to 'build' my wardrobe so I just bought a gorgeous trench. I'm bad...
Good luck, I'll send out the shirt soon (it's gonna snow so I'm gonna be busy) so it'll break up your shopping ban!

I have the same exact problem, I just sworn off shopping as well, I was recently talking to my boyfriend about how much money I make a year verses how much money I have in savings, a sad comparison. Most of my things get thrown out or donated in a few weeks and I move on. I was once told to thrown down the cash for classic items like coats and skirts with nice cuts and everything else should be purchased very cheap... I have yet to master this!

It has taken me years to get to this same point. I also really love classics much more than trendy items, though the trendy ones do work their way in sometimes! I have a trench coat that I've had for years and love. plus good cashmere sweaters, good jeans, boots.

This is SUCH a great post - it sums up what I feel whenever I go into my closet.

I've tried this resolution before, but my problem is that I LOVE to shop. So I clean out my closet, but then after a few weeks I need to shop, and I don't have the money saved for the very nice, expensive pieces. But I shop anyway, and then the problem starts all over again.

I'll definitely be watching you for inspiration!!

I feel that way about EVERYTHING. Sometimes I feel like crying when I see all the things I have. Especially when you think about how we started accumulating so much only in the past few decades. I don't how many books I've read where people could fit everything they owned into a trunk. Women had a best dress, a good dress, a few everyday dress, a dresser set, a few hair combs, some broaches and that's it. Now we have so many disposable items! I have about twenty just on my desk!

Ok, I could go on and on, so I'll stop now. Good luck on your shopping ban! I think you're well on your way to creating a really good, functional wardrobe. You've shown us a lot of really nice pieces, thrifted and new!

I have felt the same way about a lot of stuff in my closet! I don't know if you've read Nina Garcia's book The Style Strategy, but she has a chapter on cleaning out your closet and it's great! I got rid of so much stuff and used the money I made selling old clothes I didn't like anymore to buy statement, classic pieces. And I recently gave up shopping for about a month to save $$ for our honeymoon. It was tough! good luck :)

Definitely my trench coats are my essentials. I would be lost without them. I wear one at least once a week.

I think for building a wardrobe it's best to get the best quality in classic pieces. I know it's such cliche advice but it really works.
